Department of Civil Engineering

The Materials Laboratory is a leading laboratory in the Civil Engineering Department. It is equipped with numerous facilities for investigation of physical, mechanical and durability characteristics of diverse types of engineering materials. The materials that the laboratory can handle are inclusive of cementitious products, concrete, metals, timber, polymers, ceramics, and asphalt. The laboratory also provides consultancy services to the industry.

  • Appraisal of existing structures (Stress analysis of Stupas such as Jetavanaya, Abhayagiriya, Tissamaharamaya and Mirisawetiya, monitoring movements of national monuments etc.)
  • Consultancy work relating to engineering materials
  • Stress analysis of structures & components incorporating different materials models
  • Concrete mix design
  • Material and component testing facilities ( a 1000 kN universal testing machine, a 10 kNm torsion machine and a 2000 kN compression testing machine)
  • Experimental stress analysis and non-destructive tests (strain measurements, rebound hammer test, photo elasticity, ultrasonic tests, hardness and permeability tests etc).
  • Testing of Aggregates
