Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering is a multi-disciplinary field that integrates exciting and diverse disciplines such as design, robotics, systems engineering, automation, mechatronics, sustainable engineering, manufacturing, operations management, etc.
The Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering was first established in 1976 as the Department of Production Engineering. Up to now, over 1000 graduates have graduated with specialization in Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.
The Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering programme aims to provide graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be able to:
(1) Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing and engineering fundamentals,
and manufacturing and industrial engineering to develop solutions to
complex engineering problems.
(2) Identify, formulate, research literature and analyse complex engineering problems to reach
substantiated conclusions with holistic considerations for sustainable
development.
(3) Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or
processes to meet identified needs with appropriate consideration for
public health and safety,
whole-life cost, net zero carbon as well as resource, cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations as required.
(4) Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research methods including research
based knowledge, design of experiments, analysis and interpretation
of data, and synthesis of information
to provide valid conclusions.
(5) Create, select and apply, and recognize limitations of appropriate techniques, resources,
and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to
complex engineering problems.
(6) Analyse and evaluate sustainable development impacts to society, the economy, sustainability,
health and safety, legal frameworks, and the environment, when solving
complex engineering problems.
(7) Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and norms of engineering practice and
adhere to relevant national and international laws. And demonstrate an
understanding of the need for
diversity and inclusion.
(8) Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse and inclusive teams and in multi-disciplinary, face-to-face, remote and distributed settings.
(9) Communicate effectively and inclusively on complex engineering activities with the engineering
community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend
and write effective reports and design
documentation, make effective presentations, taking into account cultural, language, and learning differences.
(10) Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and
apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader
in a team, and to manage projects and in multidisciplinary
environments
(11) Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability for
a) independent and life-long learning
b) adaptability to new and emerging technologies and
c) critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change.
Within a few years of graduation, graduates who specialized in Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering are expected to:
To be a center of excellence in higher education in the field of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.
To create an innovative, project-based-learning experience for students that is focused on enhancing creative and analytical thinking, knowledge and skills in the manufacturing & industrial engineering discipline, lifelong learning, communication, positive attitude and respect for environment, ethics & sustainability.
To impact society in a positive and transformative manner by providing high quality services, consultancy and capacity building programmes to enhance the local manufacturing and service industry and improve lives and livelihood.
To create a supportive work environment that cultivate a motivated, multidisciplinary group of researchers who continuously produce research output with high impact and national relevance in the field of manufacturing & industrial engineering.

Members of “Elite” – a team competing in the FlexSim Student Simulation Competition – talked to
IISE's Frank Reddy at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, site of the
Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference 2023. Team members Anjula Nayanajith, Manidu
Hewage, Isara Tillekeratne, and Dinusha Bandara Homagama hail from University of Peradeniya, Sri
Lanka.
The research papers titled ‘A study on how organisations perceive the synergy between Lean and
Industry 4.0’ received the best research paper awards in the 'Technology Management’ track at
the
8th International Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon) held on the 28th July 2022. The
paper was based on the final year research project by Chiran Kodippili and Rajeev Karunanayake under
the supervision of Dr. Prasanna Illankoon who was formerly at the Department of Manufacturing and
Industrial Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
The two young authors consider this to be a great start to their academic and professional careers
as the
research spread across the scopes of both academia and the industry. While there were many who
contributed, the authors specially acknowledge the support of MAS Holdings (Pvt) Ltd for their
inputs.
Going ahead, the authors hope to further develop the proposed Lean x Industry 4.0 framework into an
industry ready mode.
