A final year undergraduate project titled “Design of an Interferometric Bio-Medical Radar for the Contactless Detection of Breathing and Heart Rate,” by former students Aveesha Gunasekara, Aloka Jayawardhana, and Bhagya Welagedara of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has been awarded the Eng. E.W. Karunarathne Award for the Best Undergraduate Project in Electrical Engineering for 2022/2023. The award winner is selected from among all engineering faculties islandwide. This project presents an innovative radar system that has the ability to operate at a distance from a person, eliminating the need for physical contact, and is particularly beneficial in the healthcare system when monitoring patients in situations where hygiene and comfort are of great importance. The project was supervised by Prof. Aruna Gunawardena, Prof. Disala Uduwawala, and Dr. Himal Suraweera. The award was presented at the Induction and Graduation Ceremony 2024 of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), held on July 23, 2024.
