The University of Peradeniya achieved an impressive feat at the Inter-University Human Rights Debates 2024, organized by the Capital Maharaja Group (CMG), clinching the Runner-Up Title in the English category. This prestigious competition, held annually to celebrate World Human Rights Day on December 10, brought together 300 students from 20 state and private universities across Sri Lanka, debating in English, Sinhala, and Tamil.
The University of Peradeniya’s English debating team, comprising M.I.M Imaadh and Daniel Adrian Victor from the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) and W.Amayuru Sankalpa Senadheeraand Renishka Fernando from the Faculty of Arts, Department of Law (FOA/DOL), showcased exceptional talent and critical thinking. The team delivered a powerful performance, progressing through multiple rounds and securing their place in the grand final, where they faced a tough battle before finishing as runners-up.
This milestone highlights the university’s commitment to fostering intellectual engagement and encouraging students to voice their perspectives on critical human rights issues. The Faculty of Engineering, which facilitated the team’s participation, and Mr. S.M. Dissanayake, Liaison Officer for the University Debate Team, played vital roles in supporting the team throughout the event.
The Inter-University Human Rights Debates have become a platform to nurture informed dialogue and advocacy among university students, aligning with global efforts to promote human rights awareness.
