Peradeniya Engineering Undergraduates Take the Spotlight at IESL Women Engineers Forum 2025

On June 23, 2025, the Women Engineers Forum (WEF) of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) proudly hosted a commemorative event in honour of International Women in Engineering Day, under the inspiring theme “Together We Engineer.” This celebration underscored the IESL’s steadfast commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the engineering profession.

Founded in May 2002, WEF has remained dedicated to empowering women engineers by cultivating a supportive network that encourages active contribution to the profession and society at large. The 2025 celebration marked another milestone in this journey, bringing together professionals, students, and leaders in the field of engineering.

A highlight of the event was the participation of 20 talented female undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. They captivated the audience with vibrant performances of dance and song, showcasing not only their artistic flair but also their passion and spirit. In recognition of their efforts, the performers were awarded certificates for their outstanding contributions.

The event was further distinguished by the presence of eminent guests. Eng. (Dr.) Marlene Kanga, Past President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and former National President of Engineers Australia, delivered a keynote address via a virtual platform. Her address highlighted the crucial role of collaboration and partnerships in driving innovation and impact across various engineering domains.

Eng. (Ms.) Shyma Gunawardane, Past Chairperson of WEF (2018/2019) and Council Member of IESL (2010–2014), graced the event as the Chief Guest, while Eng. Granie Jayalath, President of IESL, attended as the Guest of Honour.

A compelling panel discussion followed, centered around the themes “Power of Partnerships: How Collaboration Drives Engineering Breakthroughs” and “Allyship in Action: Men and Women Engineering Together.” The panel featured five senior IESL members and industry professionals who shared insightful perspectives and real-world experiences, reinforcing the importance of inclusive collaboration in achieving excellence in engineering.

The day concluded with a Fellowship Dinner at the Members’ Lounge, offering attendees a relaxed and engaging atmosphere in which to network, exchange ideas, and celebrate the spirit of unity within the engineering community.

This inspiring event not only celebrated the contributions of women in engineering but also reinforced the vision of working together—across gender and generations—for a more innovative and inclusive engineering future.
