Course Aim: To impart knowledge of highway design procedures including computer applications, road construction materials and highway evaluations and maintenance. Intended Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to; ➢ select construction materials based on their physical properties for design and construction of highways. ➢ estimate traffic loading for the design life using standard methods. ➢ design flexible and rigid pavements using standard methods. ➢ recognize design criteria and use computer applications for highway geometric design. ➢ recommend appropriate techniques for maintenance and rehabilitation of highways. |
||||||
Course Content: ➢ Introduction to highway planning and route planning: Development of highways, four-stage method of highway planning. ➢ Highway construction material improvements and construction techniques: Main highway construction materials, testing and improvement of construction materials, alternative construction materials, machinery and construction techniques. ➢ Traffic analysis: Types of pavements, subgrade considerations, Equivalent Axle Load Factor (EALF) & Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) calculation, estimation of design traffic. ➢ Pavement design using mechanistic approach: AASHTO road test, history of AASHTO method, AASHTO design consideration, performance criteria for flexible and rigid pavements, AASHTO flexible and rigid pavement design procedures. ➢ Highway geometric design and basic design criteria: Alignment (horizontal and vertical), cross section, design standards, basic design criteria, sight distance, design procedure. ➢ Computer applications in highway engineering: Design of highways using AutoDesk Civil 3D software. ➢ Pavement evaluations and maintenance: Pavement evaluation techniques, tools and equipment to evaluate pavements, different maintenance categories. |
