Course Aim: To impart knowledge and understanding on bearing capacity theory, analysis and design of foundations, foundations subjected to lateral and dynamic loads, foundations under difficult ground conditions and improvement of existing foundations.
Intended Learning Outcomes: ➢ analyze and design shallow foundations under different ground and loading conditions including dynamic loads. ➢ analyze and design deep foundations under different ground and loading conditions. ➢ characterize engineering properties of problematic soils and design an appropriate foundation accordingly. ➢ propose improvements for existing foundations to accommodate changing conditions. |
||||||
Course Content: (Only main topics & subtopics)
➢ Shallow foundations: Bearing capacity of shallow foundation using the theory of plasticity, shallow foundations under inclined loads, Special foundations; combined rectangular & trapezoidal footings and strap footing, foundations on slopes, flexible design of foundations, Shallow foundation subjected to dynamic loads; machine foundations. ➢ Deep foundations: Carrying capacity of pile groups in cohesive and cohesionless soils, negative skin friction, laterally loaded piles, piles in tension ➢ Problematic soils and foundation considerations: Introduction, characteristics, identification and foundation consideration for collapsible soils, expansive soils, peat, and sanitary landfills. ➢ Improvement of existing foundations: Underpinning of foundations |
