Prof. S.B.Weerakoon is a Senior Professor in Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He is a Chartered Engineer, International Professional Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, He is the country representative and Member of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the country representative in the Asian Fluid Mechanics Committee (AFMC), and member of International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute of Survey and Mapping.
He was a Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, a Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Peradeniya, and an Adjunct Professor of the United Nations University. He obtained his bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (1982) specializing in Civil Engineering from the University of Peradeniya and master’s degree (1987) and doctoral degree (1990) from the University of Tokyo, Japan specializing in hydraulic engineering. His research interests include computational fluid dynamics, climate change, hydropower development, flood modelling and storm water drainage. He has over 100 technical publications to his account and he has received presidential research awards. He has obtained number of international competitive research grants including grants from NORAD (Rs.400 Mn from 2014-2019), European Union (Rs.20 Mn from 2015-2018) and United Nations University (from 2007 -2015). He has carried out post-doctoral/collaborative research in UNESCO-IHE and TUDelft -The Netherlands, South Florida Water Management District-USA, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne-UK, University of Tokyo-Japan, IWMI-Colombo, and University of Life Sciences-Norway during his carrier.
