SELECTED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECTS AS PROJECT LEADER

Joint collaboration with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Philanthropic Organizations, Public Societies, and Government Organizations, National and International Funding Agencies, Partner Foreign Universities, Undergraduate/Postgraduate Students

Saving Lakes – World Heritage Town, Kandy Lake, Sri Lanka (2010-2018)
This project traces the socio-cultural and technological dimensions at play for the protection and remediation of a tropical urban lake, and how these dimensions guide the design of need-based solutions. It explores design requirements based on the need for sensitivity to religious and cultural norms, social values and aesthetic requirements. Project has demonstrated the importance of planning and executing an urban lake remediation project in a fast-growing city and a UNESCO heritage site. The lessons learnt are further expanded in the application to lakes of cultural significance in tropical regions.
Tsunami Mitigation by Coastal Vegetation (2004-2010)
Coastal vegetation acts as a natural barrier against extreme natural and anthropogenic activities, protecting infrastructure and human lives. Establishment of hard infrastructure for tsunami protection is not feasible in developing countries due to its cost-intensive nature. Coastal vegetation can therefore be a feasible alternative for tsunami and general coastal protection in developing countries. This project investigated the effectiveness of current coastal vegetation projects and reports a pilot-scale vegetation project, which provides insights into the management and sustainability of such projects. Pilot project was implemented in the southern region of Sri Lanka in Collaboration with Local Administrative Office. The project revealed the importance of adopting scientific and non-scientific methods of vegetation establishment and selecting appropriate species and structure of vegetation strips for tsunami protection. Community engagement was crucial to success of these projects.
Community engaged solutions for safe water, decontaminated agriculture and patient and family support in a CKDu endemic area in Sri Lanka: A pilot study (2019-2022)
Over the last three decades there is some evidence that the consumption of untreated groundwater, especially near the farming areas, is making farmers in tropical regions sick, particularly with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). Although definitive etiological evidence remains elusive, many researchers and most of the farming population see water contamination as the primary culprit. The lack of community engagement in Sri Lanka has been most prominent in the approaches to the epidemic of CKDu. This project seeks to identify the capacity for community engagement of villages in the dry zone and to test that capacity through the development of pilot projects that address key issues in provision of safe drinking water, decontamination of agricultural runoff and CKDu patient and family support.
