To introduce power transmission elements and mechanical devices to civil engineering students so that the students can identify, select and analysis those interesting mechanical system in civil engineering applications.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to;

  1. Analyse kinematics of simple mechanisms.
  2. Analyse kinematics and power of a belt drive system.
  3. Identify various gear types and kinematic analysis of a gear system.
  4. Explain and analyse air compressors.
  5. Explain thermal cycles in automobiles and analyse an internal combustion engine .
Course content/Course description
  1. Mechanisms and configuration diagrams, Instantaneous centre method for mechanism
  2. Acceleration and velocity diagrams, principle of virtual work
  3. Belts as a power transmission elements and classification, kinematic analysis of flat and V belts
  4. Compare belts with gears, ropes and chains, gear classification and terminology
  5. Kinematics of simple and compound gear trains, epicyclic gear system and speed ratios
  6. Air compressors' operation, applications, thermal analyse of air compressor systems
  7. Internal combustion engines and thermal cycles, thermal analysis of internal combustion engines
