The spaghetti bridge competition has, and will always be one of the most exciting and thrilling events marked in the event calendar.
Thanks to IABMAS who organized this competition, in collaboration with IESL YMS and CES of the University of Peradeniya, we were able to experience not just a competition, but various ways of bridge constructions as well. The competition was held at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, with the presence of teams from six different universities island wide.
The awarding ceremony of the competition was held on the 18th December at the ICSBE Kandy Conference 2022. Winners were awarded with exclusive prizes and tokens of appreciation were presented to the Judge Panel. With the presence of members of IABMAS, representatives from IESL, CES of University of Peradeniya and the winning team members, the awarding ceremony appeared to be a grand function.

De S. Chandrakeerthy Award for the “Best Paper” presented at the Annual Sessions-2022 of Society of Structural Engineers, Sri Lanka.

Prof. J. J. Wijetunge of the Department of Civil Engineering has won the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Award – 2017 under the category of Engineering Sciences, Architecture and ICT for his research work on numerical modelling and mapping of coastal impact of storm surges in Sri Lanka. He will be awarded a plaque, a certificate and a cash prize at the Awards Ceremony to be held on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the National Science Foundation this year (2018).

On 20 July 2017, the project “Mitigation of Pollution at Kandy Lake and Mid-Canal, Sri Lanka” has been awarded the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award (PEAA) by the Institute of Engineers, Singapore (IES). The project was a collaboration between UOP’s Faculty of Engineering and the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI, Singapore). Prof. Shameen Jinadasa, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering was the project’s Principal Investigator.
