Course Aim: To provide fundamental knowledge in analysis of statically indeterminate frame structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to;

➢      describe degrees of freedoms and redundancies of structures

➢      analyze 2D and 3D statically indeterminate structures

➢      predict the collapse mechanisms and collapse loads of structures

➢      solve 2D and 3D structures using software

Course Content:

➢      Kinematic Indeterminacy: Identification of the degree of kinematic indeterminacy of structures

➢      Slope Deflection Equations and Moment Distribution Method

➢      Fundamentals of the Flexibility Method: Derivation of the flexibility matrix, apply boundary conditions and solve for forces and displacements

➢      Fundamentals of the Stiffness Method: Derivation of the stiffness matrix, apply boundary conditions and solve for displacements and forces

➢      Direct-Stiffness Method: Derivation of element stiffness matrix, assembling, apply boundary condition and obtain solutions

➢      Use of Computers for Direct-Stiffness Method: Introducing a structural analysis software as a learning tool

➢      Approximate Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Structures: Approximate methods in analyzing beam and frame structures

➢      Plastic Analysis of Structures: Introduction of material nonlinearity; Section Analysis considering axial and moment interaction; Plastic analysis of beam and frame structures collapse mechanisms and ultimate loads

➢      Computer analysis of 2D and 3D structures

➢      Field Visit: Identify different types of complex structures, support conditions and loading; Visualize load paths and deflected shapes; Prediction of failure modes subjected to different loading conditions.
