Course Aim: To impart knowledge on properties and performance of concrete and its ingredients in specifying, producing, using and caring of high-performance concrete for structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to;

➢      select the most appropriate ingredients based on their composition and properties, for the production of concrete to suit the application.

➢      specify concrete with different characteristics for diverse conditions and applications.

➢      design concrete mixes to achieve specified performance requirements.

➢      evaluate the properties and performance of concrete, working life and judge compliance.

➢      propose suitable procedures for making, delivery, placing, finishing and caring of concrete, giving due consideration for the application.

Course Content:

➢      Concrete as a composite: Miscellaneous binders and matrices; Historical progression; Sustainability concepts; Safety and health issues

➢      Ingredients of concrete (Cement, Aggregate Water and Admixtures): Cement classification, hydration, Different types of ingredients; Properties; Testing of ingredients; Applications of admixtures

➢      Concept of high-performance concrete: Materials; Attributes; Methods of specifying concrete

➢      Proportioning of concrete mixes: Mix design methods

➢      Production of concrete: Mixing; Transporting; placing, finishing and curing

➢      Properties of fresh and hardened concrete: Testing methods of concrete (Non-destructive, semi-destructive and destructive testing)

➢      Durability of concrete: Concrete Shrinkage, Alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR), Sulphate attack, Carbonation; Leaching; Abrasion and Erosion; Ingress of chlorides; Corrosion of metals in concrete; Fire resistance

➢      Compliance criteria

➢      Assessment of working life: Application of quantitative methods, Introduction to software

➢      Different types of OPC based concrete and their applications: Polymer concrete;Polymer- modified concrete; Reactive-powder concrete (RPC), Roller-compacted concrete (RCC); Self- compacted concrete (SCC), Pervious concrete, Fibre-reinforced concrete

➢      Alternative binder systems: Alkali-activated cement; geopolymer concrete, Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA cement)
