The University of Peradeniya’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to serve as a key partner in the newly launched ENSURE project (Empowering Net Zero Skills for Sri Lanka’s Sustainable and Resilient Future). Inaugurated on January 8, 2026, at Waters Edge, this landmark initiative is co-funded by a EUR 761,300 grant from the European Union’s Erasmus+ program and aims to accelerate the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The project unites UoP with a powerful consortium of local institutions and European partners from Italy, Ireland, Romania, and Poland. Over its two-year implementation, the Department will collaborate extensively to bridge critical skills gaps and drive curriculum innovation in priority green technologies, including Carbon Capture, Hydrogen Energy, Smart Grids, and the Circular Economy.
A primary focus of ENSURE is the development of modular, stackable Master’s degree programs that support flexible learning. The initiative targets the enrollment of 300 Master’s students and aims to provide specialized training for 1,000 individuals nationwide while upgrading five existing training hubs for hands-on, applied learning. Through this strategic academia-industry-government partnership, the University of Peradeniya continues to lead from the front, equipping the next generation of engineers with the future-facing expertise required to meet global sustainability standards.
