Department of Mechanical Engineering

The University of Peradeniya, located on the banks of the Mahaweli River and at the foothills of the Hanthana mountain range, is celebrated as one of the most beautiful universities in the world. As Sri Lanka’s largest residential campus, it hosts over 12,000 undergraduate students across nine faculties, offering rich academic and extracurricular experiences, including opportunities in sports, arts, and diverse cultural activities.

Out of the nine faculties within the university, the Faculty of Engineering is known for its academic standards and contributions to the engineering field. Established in 1950, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya holds the distinction of being Sri Lanka’s first engineering faculty. It moved to its current location in Peradeniya in 1964. The faculty includes eight academic departments, over 100 academic staff with doctoral qualifications, and nearly 2,200 students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It offers a wide range of specializations in engineering disciplines, including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, and Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering

The faculty emphasizes high academic standards and equips students with industry-relevant skills. It offers a four-year B.Sc. Engineering Honors program specializing in six different disciplines. . Postgraduate programs include diplomas and advanced degrees such as MScEng, MPhil, and PhD in various disciplines, integrating research with practical applications to benefit both academia and industry.

Considering the departments, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is a key department within the Faculty of Engineering. It offers a robust curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, focusing on areas such as thermodynamics, materials science, fluid mechanics, energy systems, robotics, and automation. With advanced laboratories and research facilities, the department supports innovative projects and equips students to address industry challenges. It plays a critical role in fostering research and development in mechanical engineering in Sri Lanka.
