The Engineering Design Centre (EDC) of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, offers a comprehensive range of material, geotechnical, environmental, and engineering testing services to government institutions, private organizations, and contractors.<\/p>

The laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering are equipped with modern testing facilities and are operated by highly qualified academic staff and experienced technical officers. All testing procedures are conducted in accordance with recognized national and international standards to ensure accuracy, reliability, and professional integrity of results.<\/p>

The majority of testing services are carried out through the following specialized laboratories:<\/p>

  • Materials Laboratory<\/li>
  • Environmental Engineering Laboratory<\/li>
  • Fluid Mechanics Laboratory<\/li>
  • Geotechnical Laboratory<\/li>
  • Metallurgy Laboratory<\/li>
  • Surveying, Highway & Transportation Engineering Laboratory<\/li><\/ul>

    Each laboratory provides specialized testing services as outlined below.<\/p>

    Materials Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

    The Materials Laboratory conducts testing and evaluation of construction materials, including concrete, steel, asphalt, and related products.<\/p>

    Tests Conducted:<\/strong><\/p>

    • Compressive strength testing of concrete cubes<\/li>
    • Compressive strength assessment of concrete cores<\/li>
    • Testing of concrete core samples<\/li>
    • Core strength testing<\/li>
    • Beam load testing<\/li>
    • Rebound hammer testing of concrete<\/li>
    • Tensile testing of steel reinforcement<\/li>
    • Re-bend testing of steel reinforcement<\/li>
    • Density testing<\/li>
    • Calibration of concrete batching plants<\/li>
    • Quality certification testing for paving blocks (18″ \u00d7 18″)<\/li>
    • Testing of bitumen samples<\/li>
    • Marshall stability testing<\/li><\/ul>

      Geotechnical Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

      The Geotechnical Laboratory performs soil investigations and field density evaluations for construction and foundation works.<\/p>

      • Proctor compaction test<\/li>
      • Sand cone test<\/li>
      • Testing of offshore sand<\/li>
      • Determination of uniformity coefficient of sand<\/li><\/ul>

        Environmental Engineering Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

        The Environmental Engineering Laboratory provides environmental sample analysis services.<\/p>

        • Effluent water sample testing<\/li><\/ul>

          Metallurgy Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

          The Metallurgy Laboratory conducts evaluation and testing of metallic materials used in construction.<\/p>

          • Tensile testing of steel reinforcement<\/li>
          • Re-bend testing of steel reinforcement<\/li><\/ul>

            Fluid Mechanics Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

            The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory provides calibration services related to hydraulic and fluid-related equipment.<\/p>

            Tests Conducted:<\/strong><\/p>

            • Calibration of high voltage testers<\/li><\/ul>

              Surveying, Highway & Transportation Engineering Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>

              This laboratory supports highway material testing and related evaluations.<\/p>
