Engineering Design Centre

The Engineering Design Centre (EDC) of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya was established with the assistance of the Commonwealth Science Council in 1993 with the objectives of supporting Sri Lankan industries through Consultancies, Sponsored Research, Continuing Professional Development and Capacity Building of technical staff. It aims to use the latest advanced technologies for Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Material and Product Testing, and conducting short and certificate courses, while serving as the Commercial Arm of the Faculty of Engineering, bridging the Faculty to the Industries.

EDC was initially funded by the Science and Technology Personnel Development Project under the Asian Development Bank loan to the Ministry of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology and has been managed by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. Since 2004, it has been functioning as a self-sustaining centre in the Faculty of Engineering.

The EDC is governed by the rules and regulations of the University of Peradeniya and its policy decisions are taken by a management committee, which consists of seven members of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Engineering and is headed by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. The Director of the EDC, who is also a faculty member, acts as the head of the centre under the directive of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
