To introduce managerial aspects needed for engineering graduates to perform a multitasking role in the industry.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Describe evolution of management.
- Create a vision, mission, objectives, goals and a strategy for an organization.
- Explain functions within an organization including finance, human resources, marketing, engineering, legal and operations and how each function contributes to the growth and development of the organization.
- Analyse financial statements and investment opportunities of an entity.
- Apply principles of project management to plan and schedule a project.
Course Content
- Management Approaches: Evolution of management theory; scientific management; behavioural management; contemporary approaches.
- Strategic Management: Environmental analysis; SWOT; PEST; porter’s 5 force model; competitive strategies; customer focus; mission; vision; values and goals; organization structure & culture.
- Human Resources Management: Acquiring; training and developing; assessing; compensating and improving performance.
- Technology Management: Asses technology needs; acquiring technology; technology transfer.
- Marketing: Segmentation; targeting and positioning; marketing mix.
- Legal Aspects of Management: Introduction to business law; law relating to employment; occupational health and safety; environmental law.
- Financial Aspects of Management: Financial statements; P&L; balance sheet; cash flow; ration analysis; investment appraisal; payback; NPV; IRR.
- Principles of Project Management: Project planning and scheduling; critical path analysis; monitoring and controlling.
