Manufacturing Systems - PR315

Credits 3
Pre-requisites - PR 206
Core/Elective - Core Course
Aim(s)
To enable students to understand the underlying principles of modern manufacturing systems so that they can plan, control and manage manufacturing systems effectively.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Explain how the different modules of manufacturing planning and control are related in Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems software.
  2. Describe the main elements and different types of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) systems and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) and draw layout configurations of FMS.
  3. Evaluate the different shop floor control policies based on their perceived advantages/disadvantages.
  4. Model and solve extended inventory control problems including reorder point interactions, and extended job shop and flow shop scheduling problems using exact and heuristic methods.
  5. Describe the main tools used in Lean Manufacturing and explain how they can be utilized to improve manufacturing systems performance.
  6. Analyze the impact of variability on manufacturing system performance using simulation and analytical methods.
