ABOUT ME

Prof. Roshan Godaliyadda received his BSc Eng degree specialized in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class Honors at the University of Peradeniya in 2005. He received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2011. At present he is a professor attached to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

His research projects are in the areas of Signal and Image Processing, Computer Vision, Hyper Spectral Imaging, Remote Sensing and Geoscience, Smart Grid and Renewable Energy, AI and Pattern Recognition, Bio Medical Signal Processing and Bio Imaging, Computational Epidemiology, Biometrics, Spectral Imaging for Food and Water Quality Estimation, Smart Surveillance, Stochastic Processes and Random Signal Analysis, and Image Forensics. He has obtained research grants from the International Development Research Center (IDRC) Canada, National Science Foundation (NSF), Sri Lanka and other University Research grants.

He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), USA. He is member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. His major received the Presidential Award for Scientific Research in 2018 and 2019. He has won numerous Best Paper Awards in International Conferences such as the 13th IEEE International Conference on Computer Science & Education (ICCSE), Colombo, 12th IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS-2017), Peradeniya, 17th International Conference on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions (ICTer2017), Colombo, and 9th IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS-2014), Gwalior, India.

Ongoing Research and Projects

  • Modeling, analyzing, and forecasting of epidemiological patters using AI and Data analytics and development of AI-based emulators for human motion and behavior analysis during the COVID19 pandemic for data-driven optimization of containment strategies (The AI4COVID Project).

  • Utilization of data analytics and Deep Learning (DL) for COVID19 forecasting and impact analysis of demographics for disease severity estimation during the pandemic. Use of satellite imaging for outbreak severity estimation.

  • Signal Processing and AI based algorithm development for Hyper Spectral Image (HSI) analysis and Hyper-Spectral Unmixing (HU) for abundance map (land cover map) generation and end member (source signal identification for remote sensing and Geoscience.

  • Utilization of satellite imaging for vegetation zone mapping, bathymetric surveying of coastal lagoons, Detection, and mapping of mineral deposits of north and eastern Sri Lanka using hyperspectral imaging (Lithological mapping).

  • Development of Novel Signal Processing algorithms for Non-Intrusive Load monitoring (NILM) under voltage fluctuations, solar power influx while incorporating usage patterns to improve performance. This is to facilitate Demand Side Management (DSM) for the Smart Grid.

  • Sky image-based forecasting system for micro-level solar irradiance prediction based on Computer Vision.

  • Impact analysis of Solar PV integration on LV networks and state estimation algorithm development for LV networks with high PV penetration. Development of a coordinated PV rephasing algorithm based on swarm optimization for maximization of renewable energy integration capability.

  • Developing Non-intrusive non-transmitting wearable, a fetal condition and breathing pattern monitoring system for pregnant mothers based on inertial measurement unit measurements. The detection algorithms are developed using signal processing and AI techniques.

  • Developing a Biometrics analysis tool for limb movement monitoring based on Inertial Measurement Units and Data Analytics for Gait Analysis and Activity Monitoring. The work attempts to distinguish subtle changes in gait and posture and identify hand movement patterns distinctively to ascertain burden of repetitive movements on joints.

  • Enhancing and feature extraction from images taken in low light conditions using DL based architectures inspired by physics models.

  • Use of image processing for optimal image segmentation targeting applications in image forensics such as forgery detection.

  • Computer vision-based solutions for road traffic monitoring through CCTV feeds and the use of computer vision for human activity recognition in groups.

  • Food quality analysis, adulteration and condition monitoring of both solid/powdery and liquid-based food using reflective, and transmittance based multispectral imaging techniques. Development of tools for functional mapping of adulteration levels in contaminated food for quality control purposes. Utilization of data driven unsupervised clustering tools for oil re-heating activity recognition.

  • Development of AI tools for Optical Wireless Systems for Underwater and Indoor channel communication.
