To provide an in-depth analysis of coastal hydrodynamic and wave processes and to introduce application of engineering principles to solve problems in coastal environment giving due consideration to coastal zone management programme.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to;<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Explain wave generation, propagation, forecasting, measurements and wave analysis.<\/li>\n
  2. Apply wave theories to analysis coastal hydrodynamic processes.<\/li>\n
  3. Analysis coastal processes that need to be considered in coastal engineering design projects, such as coastal protection structures and harbour structures.<\/li>\n
  4. Calculate scales for hydraulic modelling and be aware of scale effects.<\/li>\n
  5. Describe and plan coastal zone management programme.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n

  1. Coastal environment :<\/a> Coastal features, tides, wave generation by wind, wave propagation and forecasting, wave measurements, wave analysis<\/li>\n
  2. Coastal and estuarine hydraulics :<\/a> Wave theories, estuarine environment, sediment transport in estuaries<\/li>\n
  3. Nearshore coastal processes :<\/a> Nearshore currents, wave breaking, longshore sediment transport, onshore-offshore sediment transport<\/li>\n
  4. Coastal and harbor structures :<\/a> Coast protection structures, port and harbor structures, hydraulic and structural responses, introduction to physical modeling<\/li>\n
  5. Coastal zone management in Sri Lanka :<\/a> Environmental problems of Sri Lankan coast, coastal hazards, development of coastal zone management program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n
