<strong>determine <\/strong>basic engineering and physical properties of soils and <strong>classify <\/strong>soils for engineering purposes.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>apply <\/strong>the effective stress concept to determine stress distribution of soils due to geostatic stresses.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>relate <\/strong>laboratory compaction to field applications.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>describe <\/strong>internal and external geological processes and the geology of Sri Lanka.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Elements of stress analysis: <\/strong>Effective stress concept, stresses in ground, unsaturated zone, stress state at a point in soil mass.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Compaction: <\/strong>Importance of soil compaction<strong>, <\/strong>laboratory and field compaction, quality control in field compaction.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u27a2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
