New Mechanical Engineering Specialization Programme Structure

Effective from 2024, for E/22 batch onwards

Adding a multi-disciplinary flavour into Mechanical Engineering Education in Sri Lanka, the department has diversified its specialization programme, providing the students with an opportunity for in-depth investigation into an area of Mechanical Engineering of their choice: One programme many specializations.

The department has made a major revision of the course structure and all the core courses offered throughout its entire specialization programme with the following objectives.

Objectives

To provide the students with,

  • Improved in-depth knowledge in Mechanical Engineering,
    • Sound background in fundamentals, improved analytical skills and problem formulation and solving skills
  • More opportunities to develop boundary crossing competencies to become well rounded engineers,
    • Critical thinking, Logical reasoning, Lateral thinking, Personality building, Team working, Innovation, Management, Communication, Socio-economic considerations, Ethics and Sustainability
  • The flexibility for in-depth understanding in a major area in Mechanical Engineering of their choice
    • In-depth knowledge in one related Engineering Syste

Sub-specializations


The students are required to follow one of the four sub-specializations in Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Systems; Energy Systems; Mechatronics & Robotics; Technopreneurship. A student is required to follow 5 courses [15 credits] out of 7 courses in each basket of courses listed under Prescribed Elective courses to claim the sub-specialization track (concentration).
