The Engineering Design Center (EDC), Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya was requested to conduct a programmer on Training for Trainers (TOT) by letter dated 13.07.2016 from Mr. Darshana Bandara Samarakoon, Project Coordinator, North East Local Service Improvement Project (NELSIP) of Ministry of Provincial Council and Local Government. The participants were nominated by the NELSIP and there were about 175 technical officers participating.
The Training for Trainers (TOT) programme was initiated by Mr. A.R. Pramila Wijesigha, Chief Engineer, NELSIP, NELSIP Project after identifying training needs in engineering activities of his technical staff and the agenda was discussed with Dr. S.B. Wijekoon, former Director/EDC which was later undertaken and successfully conducted under supervision and advises of Dr. B.G.L.T. Samaranayake, present Director/EDC. The EDC undertook this programme with the intension of supporting the engineering industry, which is among the mission of EDC.
The proposal forwarded by the EDC was approved by the evaluation committee, and the programme started on the 20th January 2017 and successfully finished on the 15th July 2017.
There were seven (07) certificate courses conducted with a class size of 25 (technical officers), where the courses were selected for the participants by the Ministry of Provincial Council and Local Government. The courses are:
- Certificate Course on Land Surveying using Modern Equipment
- Certificate Course for on Geographical Information Systems
- Certificate Course for on Preparation and Maintenance of Machinery
- Certificate Course on AutoCAD
- Certificate Course on Quality Control System on Construction Work
- Certificate Course on Preparation of Estimates and Bid Documents
- Certificate Course on Landscaping in Sites
Since the ministry requested to provide residential facilities for the all technical officers participated, accommodation was arranged within the University of Peradeniya throughout the programme.
The resource panel comprised of faculty members and from the industry with over 20 years of experience in the field, who were approved by the EDC Management Committee.
At the completion of the Training of Trainers programme funded by the World Bank for the first batch, the certificate awarding ceremony was held on the 9th December 2017 at Hotel Earl’s Regent. The Chief Guest was Mr. Darshana Bandara Samarakoon, Project Coordinator of the NELSIP and the Guest of Honour was Eng. T. M. J. Tennakoon of Consultant Engineers Associates. The event was graced by Prof. Leelanada Rajapaksha Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Mr. Premila Wijesinghe, Chief Engineers of NELSIP, Mr. Daminda Kumara, Senior Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Governments, members of the resource pool and the Director EDC. The event was attended by almost all the participants of the TOT programme. Some of the high lights of the event are shown in the pictures below:
