Canadian and University of Peradeniya promote scholar exchanges

A Civil Engineering student group of the University of Peradeniya won the 1st place of inter-University mix design competition held on October 09, 2015. The competition was conducted by the Holcim Lanka Ltd. and it was held for the consecutive second year, it was coordinated at the Peradeniya University by the Civil Engineering Society (CES). The winning group comprised of: Mr. M.M.S.B. Rathnayake, Mr. R.M.A. Buddhika, Mr. P.N.M Madushanka, and Mr. K.A.T.M. Abesiriwardana and they were awarded a visit to Holcim cement plants in Singapore and Malaysia. The competition initiated in last August simultaneously at the three leading civil engineering departments in the University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, and University of Ruhuna. The challenge was to design concrete mix proportions to achieve the highest strength/cost ratio. The competition was open to any civil engineering student group comprising three final year students and one third year student. The best five groups of each University were selected through to the inter-University competition. At the Peradeniya University, sixteen groups competed to get through to the final round. The Holcim Lanka Ltd. had put together the event outstandingly, the entire process comprised of several well organised stages took place over two months. In addition to rewarding the winning group with an overseas trip, all the participants were given certificates and valuable gift packs. Besides, the peak value of the event was that all the students gained an incomparable experience over high performance concrete production.

Canadian and University of Peradeniya promote scholar exchanges

University of Calgary has begun the implementation of the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program, with $495,500in fundingannounced earlier this year by Universities Canada, with the support of the Community Foundations of Canada and the Rideau Hall Foundation, as well as the financial support from the Government of Canada, provincial governments and the private sector. The aim of the funding is to “lay the foundation for the next generation of entrepreneurs, public servants, community leaders and academics with innovative minds and a sense of commitment to Canada and the Commonwealth.”
