Full time PhD Scholarship under Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) - University of Peradeniya(UOP) Split PhD Program

Full Time PhD Scholarship Opportunity Under RMIT-UOP Split PhD Programme:

Scholarship :
TITLE: Lightweight concrete materials for prefabricated modular construction

Brief Description:
Aerated concrete is either a cement or lime mortar known as lightweight concrete, which include air-voids in the mortar matrix by means of a suitable aerating agent. In general, aerated concrete falls into the group of cellular concrete with the key advantage of weight reduction, which could be economically used in the design of supporting structures including the foundation and walls of lower floors. It provides a high degree of thermal insulation and significant material savings due to the porous structure. The properties of light concrete depend on its microstructure and composition, influenced by the type of binder, pore-formation and curing methods. Although aerated concrete was initially investigated for use as insulation material, there has been increased interest in its structural characteristics. The focus of this project is to investigate the properties of aerated concrete in terms of physical (microstructure, density), chemical, mechanical (compressive and tensile strengths, modulus of elasticity, drying shrinkage) and functional (thermal insulation, moisture transport, durability, fire resistance and acoustic insulation) characteristics. Project also seek to develop modelling capabilities of aerated concrete.

Supervisors:
UOP supervisors: Dr. Hiran Yapa, Dr. Samith Budhdhika
RMIT Supervisors: Prof. Priyan Mendis, Dr. Kate Nguyen
Commencement date: April 2021

Features of the PhD are as follows:
1] Duration of the PhD is 3-3.5 years on a full time basis and the candidate will spend the first year at UOP and rest of the time at RMIT, Australia.
2] The tuition fee is fully waived and the selected candidate will get the standard scholarships for living stipend during the stay in Sri Lanka and Australia.
3] There will be at least one supervisor each from RMIT and UOP.
4] Degrees will be awarded from both institutions acknowledging the joint supervision. You will get two separate degree certificates, one each from RMIT and UOP.
Successful candidates should have the following:
1] BSc Engineering (specializing in Civil Engineering) with at least Second class upper division
2] IELTS overall band of 6.5 with each band above 6.0

We are looking for a dynamic candidate with the above qualifications.
