Department of Civil Engineering

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

The department of Civil Engineering comprising of three main divisions, viz. Material and Structural Engineering, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical and Transportation Engineering offers diverse courses not only in the civil engineering programme but also in the General Programme and in the other Specialization Programmes in the Faculty of Engineering.

"The mission of the Faculty is to acquire, promote and disseminate knowledge of engineering sciences and their application to improve the quality of life and, in particular, to equip present and future generations of men and women with skills and attitudes to attain competence as professional engineers, and to interact with industry by providing expertise and specialised facilities".

The course in Civil Engineering is designed to equip students with a thorough grounding of mathematics, engineering sciences and technology, with a good understanding of the basic principles of core subjects in Civil Engineering, embracing theory, analysis and design.

A good grasp of the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering, computing and software-based applications, communication skills, and complementary studies including economics, management, health, safety, risk, sustainability, professional ethics and industrial training in an engineering environment, is ensured.

The BScEng graduate specialising in Civil Engineering is thus expected to:

have a sound understanding of theory, laboratory practice and design and be able to apply this knowledge to the practice of engineering

be capable of using appropriate engineering methods and tools including IT

be capable of carrying out tasks as an individual and as a member of a team in multidisciplinary environments

be able to effectively communicate technical information orally, in the form of drawings and reports, and by audio-visual techniques

be aware of the impact of engineering activity on the social, industrial and physical environment in Sri Lanka and elsewhere

be able to engage in independent learning and to keep abreast of up-to-date tools and techniques

be able to act professionally and ethically and take responsibility within the limits of competence and

be able to integrate the knowledge and understanding of mathematics, science, computer based methods, design, the economic, social and environmental context, and engineering practice, to solve engineering problems of a complex nature.

be able to manage and supervise other people.

possess an appreciation of the role of engineering – especially infrastructure planning and construction engineering – activities in the economic and social development of the country.

have the potential to eventually provide leadership and managerial skills for the successful management of engineering and other industrial and commercial enterprises.

The degree programme covers all main engineering topics related to civil engineering and equips the students with essential skills to practise as a professional engineer.
