DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES TO EUROCODE 3 (EC3)

INTRODUCTION

For structural design of steel structures, mostly BS5950 has been in use for more than last two decades in Sri Lanka .  However, due to changes in Europe, a set of harmonized codes for design of structures namely “Eurocodes” have been adopted and henceforth relevant BS codes including BS 5950 were withdrawn in 2010. This has necessitated the change of design standards of many countries outside Europe including Sri Lanka.  Structural Steel Design according to Eurocode as given in EC3 follows mostly the same design principals as of BS5950. However, there are well defined differences between BS5950 and in l Eurocodes in terminologies, symbols and the way they are presented. This course is intended to highlight these changes and to facilitate the use of EC3 for the structural design of steel.
